La musique du congolais Bony Bikaye, il a longtemps fallu la chercher dans le purgatoire des "musiques du monde", lieu de tous les possibles, où les diamants bruts cohabitaient avec des cauchemars fades de blancs-becs qui congelaient la rumba façon poisson pané. Parfois, pêché plus subtil, ils la mettaient au menu alors que d’aucuns voulaient passer à autre chose.
C'est le trio TONN3RR3 qui reprend le flambeau pour construire avec lui ce disque qui annonce la couleur fièrement : "It’s a bomb". Pensé à la maison par Guillaume Gilles (compo/claviers), l’album a été fini au studio One Two Pass It, avec Olivier Viadero et Gaëlle Salomon aux percus, Yoann Dubaud (machines & basse) et Guillaume Loizillon (programmation synthés et entremetteur de cette affaire). C’est un disque profondément musical, joué par une équipe érudite mais qui n’a plus rien à prouver, ça s’entend. Sans attitude, le disque flotte bien au-dessus de la mêlée.
On est prévenus : "keba na butu", méfie-toi. Gaffe, oui : au-delà des plaisirs simples du soukouss, ou du riff de guitare rumba qui tourne comme un manège qui passe plus le contrôle technique, c’est la luxuriance totale des arrangements qui frappe. L’orchestre tout-puissant met tout le monde à l’amende dans un style décloisonné, avec un bel esprit de synthèse. Il y a du droit, du syncopé, de la 808, et les basses typiques qui font lever les genoux...mais ce n’est jamais le gloubiboulga : dans cette sono mondiale, il y a une vision.
Bikaye, renommé BIKAY3 pour l’occasion, s’amuse de sa voix bien tapée dont le vibrato fou s’est bonifié comme une prune des familles. Il la met au service - dans "Zela" et "Balobi" notamment - d’une flamboyance cabotine à la Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Bikaye aime bien jouer le chant, son plaisir de la langue va jusqu'au pur récit. Ainsi "La forêt et les dieux" est une excursion en français dans la brousse, qui avance sur un tapis moussu de synthés et de percus tissé par TONN3RR3, où il nous raconte d'une voix parlée-mouillée une cosmogonie géniale à dormir debout.
Le synthé de Guillaume Loizillon et la flûte de Nicole Mitchell complètent dans Akei cette promenade dans le "bush of ghosts " de Byrne/Eno, où ça jacte lingala ou kikongo."It's a bomb" rumba bâtarde, clôt le bal avec un rimshot qui claque comme une main fraiche sur une peau consentante.
Alors pour sûr, on vit un âge d'or, les reissues sortent en masse et satisfont notre désir de rattrapage scolaire du patrimoine musical de nos voisins, mais ne ratons pas le coche : c'est le moment ou jamais d'écouter la musique des vivants.

For a long time, the music of Congo-born Bony Bikaye had to be sought in the purgatory of "world music", where diamonds in the rough cohabited with bland nightmares of white dudes who froze rumba like fish sticks. Worse, they did put it on the menu, when so many longed to move on. Take Bikaye, who grew up listening to modern european music, digs Krautrock, struggles with tradition, obviously looking for trouble in the genre. Hector Zazou, intrigued, produces and even signs the records he made with CY1 (Loizillon/Micheli), and a few brilliant defectors from Aksak Maboul.
Now it's up to french trio TONN3RR3 to take up the torch and build this project that proudly brags: "It's a bomb".

Freestyle, synthetic : something old, something new, something what-the- fuck-is-that-now. There's straight, there's syncopated, there's 808 and knee-jerk inducing bass patterns...with a vision. BIKAY3 plays his voice more than ever. His crazy vibrato has improved like hard liquor over the years. In "Zela" and "Balobi" in particular, he puts it to good use with flamboyant, Screamin' Jay Hawkins-style antics. He can also resort to pure storytelling : "La forêt et les dieux", is a French-spoken excursion into the wild, moving along in grasslands of synths and percussion with TONN3RR3. A tale of gods and spirits, plain and simple. Nicole Mitchell brings the occasional flute in “Akei” for this trip in the bush of ghosts where lingala and kikongo rub with English and French. They saved "It's a bomb" for the end, a bastardized rumba, with rimshots that slap like a cool hand on willing skin.
We’re living in a golden age of reissues coming out in droves and satisfying our desire to catch up on our neighbors' musical heritage, but let's not miss the boat : it's now or never to listen to the music of the living.
